Зустріч на Шляху Пам’яті

11 липня у сесійній залі Чортківської міської ради відбулася "Зустріч на Шляху Пам’яті" - мешканців міста з групою гостей з Ізраїлю, наших колишніх земляків.

Долі усіх цих людей тією чи іншою мірою пов’язані з Чортковом, з трагедією його єврейської громади у роки нацистської окупації.

Серед гостей була Марта Вінтер-Горен, вже знайома нам за книжкою "Донечка, про яку ми завжди мріяли".

Історія Марти Вінтер, яка у дитинстві пережила жах Голокосту у Чорткові та Варшаві, минулого року стала відомою українському читачеві завдяки перекладу Антона Степаненка та прекрасному виданню Українського центру вивчення історії Голокосту.

На зустрічі йшла мова про трагічне минуле і, сподіваємось, світле майбутнє наших народів. Про те, що гірка пам’ять може й надалі залишатися стіною між нами. Але ця пам’ять, відновлена, осмислена та проговорена, може стати шляхом, мостом - до порозуміння, взаємного співчуття, прощення та майбутнього партнерства у добрих справах.

Серед іншого було також представлено одне з останніх українських видань з історії Голокосту - книжку Роберта Кувалека "Табір смерті у Белжеці". Саме до Белжецького табору було депортовано у 1942 році тисячі в’язнів єврейського гетто Чорткова, інших міст та містечок Галичини.

Висловлюємо вдячність за організаційне сприяння у проведенні зустрічі Чортківській міській раді, за допомогу у перекладі нашої розмови Тетяні Мероник та Віктору Єдинаку, за створення фотохроніки події - Антону Гонтару, за чудовий спів - Вірі Потикевич.

Маємо надію, що цей візит наших земляків з Ізраїлю на свою малу Батьківщину, до рідного їм Чорткова, не був останнім.

Chortkiv, Ternopil region. The memories are still alive of the yesterday’s “Meeting on the Path of Memory”, an unusual event held in the premises of the Town Council’s session hall, where our local community met a group of guests from Israel, our former countrymen.

In one way or another, the fate of all those people is tied to Chortkiv, as well as to tragic events which occurred to the town’s Jewish community during the Nazi occupation.

Among the guests was Marta Winter-Goren, a Holocaust survivor you may have read about from the book “The Daughter We Had Always Wanted” by Naomi Morgenstern. The story of Marta, a young Jewish child who witnessed the Holocaust horrors in Chortkiv and Warsaw, has become known to the local reader thanks to the Ukrainian adaptation project done by Anton Stepanenko and published by the Ukrainian Center for the Study of the Holocaust History.

In the spotlight of the meeting was the topic of our common tragic past, as well as hope for the shining future for our peoples. It’s evident that the bitter truth may still create obstacles between us all. At the same time, the memory which we restore, ponder and bring to the light, - promises to become a bridge leading to mutual understanding, compassion, forgiveness and future cooperation for the noble cause.

Among other things, the meeting showcased one of the most recent Ukrainian editions on the Holocaust history, the "Belzec Death Camp" book by Robert Kuwalek. In 1942, Belzec extermination camp was the very place to become the last destination for thousands of prisoners from Chortkiv and other Galician Jewish ghettos.

We would like to kindly thank everyone involved, but more particularly Chortkiv Town Council for having us, our wonderful interpreters Tetiana Meronyk and Viktor Yedynak, Anton Hontar for making a photo report, Vira Potykevych for her lovely singing.

We hope that it was not for the last time that our Israeli friends visited their small homeland and their native town of Chortkiv.
